Diablo II

Diablo II

The rock that modern ARPGs are built on

Diablo II is the game that basically created the modern action RPG. When it came out in 2000, nothing else really looked or played like it. Blizzard North took the foundation laid by the first Diablo and turned it into something massive, something that felt alive in a way few games ever have. The world felt dangerous. The loot felt meaningful. The classes felt distinct. It wasn’t just another dark fantasy game. It set a standard that pretty much every ARPG since has tried to live up to, whether they admit it or not.

The original team at Blizzard North, the same group that gave us the first Diablo, poured everything into this game. You can feel it in the atmosphere, in the itemization, in the way the world just pulls you in and doesn’t let go. Even now, more than two decades later, Diablo II still feels special. It’s the kind of game that doesn’t just influence a genre. It basically defines what a lot of people think an ARPG should be.

The loot chase, the build crafting, the dark tone, the sense that every run could go completely differently. All of that started here in a big way. A lot of games have tried to capture what Diablo II did. Very few have actually succeeded.

Diablo II Story and Setting

You play as one of seven heroes trying to stop Diablo and his brothers from destroying the world. The story pulls you through five acts that take you from the ruins of Tristram all the way into Hell. The lore feels dark and grounded. It still influences how most ARPGs try to handle story and atmosphere today.

Gameplay Features

  • Seven distinct classes with deep skill trees
  • Some of the best itemization ever made in the genre
  • Strong focus on loot and character progression
  • Excellent multiplayer support for its time
  • Extremely replayable thanks to randomized maps and items
  • Brutal difficulty that rewards smart play and preparation

Current State

Diablo II still has a very dedicated player base. The official remaster, Diablo II: Resurrected, launched in 2021 and sparked resurgence of the original game’s popularity. The modding scene remains extremely active with modders in communities like Phrozen Keep still supporting each other to update and create new mods 25 years after the game’s release. Many players still prefer the original or use popular mods like SlashDiablo and Project Diablo 2.

Why Play Diablo II Now?

Diablo II is the foundation of almost every modern ARPG. If you want to understand where the genre came from, this is the game. The itemization still feels better than most newer titles. You actually get excited when a rare item drops. Honestly, the core loop is just that good. The classes feel distinct, the loot chase is satisfying, and the atmosphere is unmatched. Even with newer ARPGs out there, Diablo II still delivers something special that a lot of modern games miss. If you haven’t played it, or haven’t played it in years, it’s worth revisiting.
