Crate Entertainment started in 2008 when a group of former Iron Lore veterans, including lead designer Arthur Bruno, decided they wanted to make games their own way. After Titan Quest, they set out to stay independent and build deep games in the genres they actually love. No big publishers calling the shots. No outside investors steering the ship. Just a small team focused on creative integrity and efficient development.
Their first Game was Grim Dawn which received rave reviews from players (10/10 on Steam) and critics alike. Initially self-funded, they ran a successful Kickstarter in 2012 and released in 2016, it became one of the strongest modern ARPGs out there. The base game has sold over five million copies, with more than six million DLC units moved on PC alone. The Definitive Edition hit Xbox in 2021, and the game is still getting major support. The third and largest expansion, Fangs of Asterkarn, is set to release on July 23, 2026.
That success let Crate stay fully independent. Their second title, the town-builder Farthest Frontier, launched in 2025 and has already sold over a million copies. The studio is now around thirty people strong and has multiple projects in the works, including the next generation of their proprietary engine, and RTS game Set in the Grim Dawn world of Cairn, and early groundwork toward a future Grim Dawn sequel. For ARPG fans who value thoughtful design and long-term support over flashy marketing, Crate remains one of the most reliable studios in the genre.
